KUCHING (March 12): Kampung Peros in Krokong, Bau, is making strides as a sustainable tourism destination through a series of initiatives led by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA).
According to a statement from Unimas FACA, students under the 12-week Service Learning Malaysia–University for Society (Sulam) programme collaborated with the local community to develop promotional materials, enhance social media presence, and produce documentaries showcasing the village’s landscapes, heritage, and culture.
The Fine Arts students also worked with local youth to create murals reflecting Bidayuh traditions, with one certified as a Pokéstop/Portal to attract visitors.
FACA Sulam coordinator Noorhaslina Senin highlighted that the collaboration between students and the community allows students to deeply understand and appreciate local cultures while applying their academic knowledge to real-world situations.
Building on the momentum, a Smartphone Videography Workshop was also held in February to equip villagers with content creation skills.
Kampung Peros youth leader Modrian Dihoi disclosed that prior to the workshop, they relied on others to promote their village.
“Now, we have the skills to create our own videos,” said Modrian.
The transformation continued with the contribution of Indonesian graphic designer Anang Saptoto, who created a spontaneous mural featuring Kampung Peros’ beloved chef, Sinah Dihoi, and her ‘Ayam Pansuh’ recipe, an authentic Dayak dish.
The community also took the initiative to repaint and refresh the village hall, making it more welcoming for visitors.
Kampung Peros community coordinator Joseph Jiep Sayon said these efforts are already yielding results.
“More people are visiting, and we hope this collaboration with Unimas will continue,” he said.
With a strengthened digital presence and creative enhancements, Kampung Peros is positioning itself as a must-visit cultural and adventure tourism destination in Sarawak.
