BIOSITES WITHIN SARAWAK DELTA GEOPARK

Home to diverse biological resources

Within the SDGp, there are a total of 11 Totally Protected Areas, including six national parks, four nature reserves, and one wildlife sanctuary. The Forest Department Sarawak enforces the Forests Ordinance, 2015; while the Sarawak Forestry Corporation enforces the National Parks and Nature Reserves Ordinance, 1998 and the Wild Life Protection Ordinance, 1998. These areas are crucial for protecting various species and ecosystems, maintaining ecological balance, ensuring that biodiversity is maintained and enhanced across the region. National Parks cover areas more than 1,000 hectares representing natural ecosystems and habitats. The natural vegetation in the SDGp is evergreen tropical rainforest, and the main types of forest habitats are mixed dipterocarp forest, heath forest, peat swamp forest, and mangrove forest. The distribution of these types of forest is dependent on the type of soils, rainfall, and topography among others.
