Sarawak Delta Geopark To Become UNESCO Global Geopark Next Year

BAU: Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg is optimistic that Bau has the potential to become an increasingly popular geotourism site with the recognition of Sarawak Delta Geopark as a UNESCO Global Geopark next year.

According to him, efforts are actively being carried out by various parties under the administration of the Bau District Office in preparation for the evaluation by UNESCO next month.

"Bau is part of the Sarawak Delta Geopark. We aim to obtain UNESCO recognition next year where Bau will be placed on the world map together with Kuching, Padawan and Siburan," he said.

He said this when opening the 205th Anniversary Celebration of Bau District, Tasik Biru Festival and Tasik Biru Resort City here, on Thursday.

Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that apart from efforts to elevate Bau's position to the international level, human capital development, especially among the younger generation, is also being emphasised as part of the sustainable development strategy.

"We want to improve the quality of the younger generation in Bau, especially in terms of knowledge. From there we can create new economic activities and generate income, thus building a sustainable economy," he said.

In a related development, the Sarawak Premier also expressed his confidence that Sarawak will emerge as a major player in the renewable energy sector in the ASEAN region.

"I am confident that in the new economy, Sarawak will stand out. We will be a major player in ASEAN in terms of renewable energy," he said.

Also present at the event were the Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Deputy Minister of Transport (Maritime and Riverine), Dato Henry Harry Jinep, Serembu Assemblyman, Miro Simuh, Opar Assemblyman, Billy Sujang, Managing Director of Tecktonic and Sons Holdings Sdn.
